What You Need To Know About Colorado Water
If you’re a Colorado resident curious about the quality of the state’s water, this article is for you!
Many people have a common misconception that Colorado has some of the nation’s best drinking water. Many of us claim and brag about the fresh mountain spring water and snowmelt that supplies our city’s water. Well, I have some news for you. According to a study done in 2020, Colorado ranks 33rd on the U.S. state’s water quality ranking…
Despite the reputation of Colorado’s “environmental consciousness,” we are in the bottom 20 of the nation’s water quality ranking! This is due to large agricultural areas producing contaminants, our aging pipes, and other reasons. For the sake of narrowing down this vast state, I’ll focus mostly on Denver’s water supply and surrounding areas.
Colorado’s Water Contaminants
According to cleeancoolwater.com, “Colorado cities and towns, tap water may be affected by THMs. As a result, many Colorado water boards recommend carbon filtering, either in-line or at the point of use. Recently, The Denver Post reported on a scheme by Denver water to begin sending residents Brita filters as of April 2020.”
Denver Water, the water utility responsible for the collection, storage, quality control, and distribution of drinking water to 1.4 million people, says the water is perfectly safe, but they do recommend using a filter if you are concerned about Lead and Chlorine byproducts.
Colorado’s Water “Hardness”
|Relative Hardness||Mg/L||(Grains per Gallon)|
|Soft||0-60 mg/L||0 – 3.5 gpg|
|Moderately Hard||60-120 mg/L||3.5 – 7.0 gpg|
|Hard||120 mg/L – 180||7.0 – 10.5 gpg|
|Very Hard||Over 180 mg/L||Over 10.5 gpg|

Or maybe you just want to treat your tastebuds, and plain water just doesn’t do the trick. If that’s the case, you most likely opt out for a more flavorful beverage such as soda or tea. Here are my favorite infused-water recipes that will not only taste great but offer amazing health benefits.
Why Your Tap Water Tastes Strange
Our water supply goes through a complex filtration system via our city. BUT, it leaves behind many chemicals, impurities, and undesired hard minerals. Bitter-tasting tap water is often a result of high concentrations of total dissolved solids (TDS). Water with high concentrations of TDS is called hard water. About 85% of American homes have hard water that greatly affects the quality and taste.
What Can You Do?
The first and most important tip for great-tasting water is to filter it. The easiest and most effective solution is to install a water filtration system. Not only does this improve the taste, but it offers a vast variety of household benefits. You can learn more here.
Colorado Springs Utilities reports a hardness measurement of 1.3 – 2.8 grains per gallon (gpg), which gives its water a relatively soft rating. For comparison, Denver has a reported 4.2 gpg and the city of Pueblo has the state’s hardest water at 10.6 gpg.
According To Denver Water…
Denver’s water is slightly harder in the winter when many lakes and streams freeze. It is softer during late spring through fall when the snow melts and causes runoff that makes its way into the reservoirs. Denver’s hard water creates scale. An initial scale usually takes two to five years to form and continues to build up over time. In older areas, while thick scale reduces the rate of flow, it prevents water from being in contact with the plumbing. This protects pipes from corrosion and customers from potentially harmful metals. When using a cold water humidifier, hardness in the water can cause residue deposits on furniture. Deposits can be minimized by using half tap water and half distilled water in the humidifier.
Tap water in most areas of Colorado is still legally safe to drink. But, to fully protect your body, water filtration should be used to remove chemicals, impurities, and other harmful substances. A filtration system will also provide tastier water.
