World Water Day has been held on March 22nd every year since 1993.
This day is focused on the importance of freshwater and raises awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water. It is also about taking action to tackle the global water crisis.
The Global Water Crisis
The Global Water Crisis is the extreme lack of clean, safe water. Billions of people worldwide lack access to water. And 2.7 billion find water to be scarce for at least one month of the year. Only 2.5% of all water in the world is fresh water. And, only 1% of it is accessible.
What Are The Major Causes of The Global Water Crisis?
Poor sanitation and lack of waste treatment plants have an extremely negative effect on the already dangerous water crisis. As time goes on, the damage will be exasperated.
Groundwater Over Drafting
The excessive use of groundwater in our agricultural industries is diminishing and wasting our water supply. Over 70% of our water is used for crops but most of it is wasted due to leaky pipes and poor techniques. Oh, and one hamburger takes 630 gallons of water to produce.
Taking long showers, keeping the water running while brushing teeth, and other overuses can be held slightly responsible.
Lots of groundwater worldwide is ridden with disease due to a lack of proper treatment.
This is changing the rainfall and evaporation of water. Deforestation causes a lack of water. And due to climate change, there is a huge loss of groundwater.
The effects of the crisis include death, disease, warfare, livestock problems, malnutrition, along many other societal impacts.
What Can We Do?
Some of the largest causes are out of our control. But, we can inform ourselves and others and order people in power to take charge. We can also practice responsible water use.
The reality of clean water can be scary, but it is important to recognize.
Celebrate World Water Day with Kids
Children are our future. And how we act and behave now determines the quality of life they will have in adulthood. Right now, we can educate them in fun ways to cultivate empathy and awareness. Here are some ways to celebrate with the little ones.
